Was the Societe General fraud avoidable? The Intellinx answer

The worst fraud case in history hits the second largest French bank, resulting in losses of over 7 billion dollars.
As shock waves of the Societe Generale fraud start to settle down most details of this astonishing scheme are still unknown. Yet, it is clear that the bank’s controls have not withstood the deep knowledge and high capabilities of the perpetrator, Jerome Kerviel.
"Until the case is heard in court, we won't have the details of how everything happened," says Avivah Litan, distinguished analyst at Gartner. One thing Litan asserts: Kerviel should have been caught. "There are some good technology solutions, strong employee monitoring tools to look at everything an employee does. With the right access controls and monitoring controls in place, this would not have happened."
“If the reports are correct that this individual was using other employees' passwords and covering his tracks by taking reverse positions in the bank's reconciliation system, smartcard [log-in] authorization and software that tracks keystrokes to workstations probably would have stopped him,” Continues Litan.
Intellinx could have proven very useful in detecting and preventing such a case. Intellinx rules, utilized as compensating controls for: 1- ensuring segregation of duties, 2- detecting usage of same-terminal by several user-ids, 3- tracking patterns of read/ update at odd frequencies and 4- identifying excessive total amounts of transactions per user, would have raised the necessary red-flags in time.

New Intellinx Version 3 Combines Investigative Case Management with Unsurpassed User Behavior Monitoring Cross-Platform

The new version of the Intellinx insider threat software now offers investigative case management capabilities in addition to tracking user behavior in internal business applications across multiple platforms, including Mainframe, iSeries, Web, and others.
Intellinx Version 3 is an end-to-end enterprise level solution for detecting internal fraud and information leakage. It captures and analyzes user activity traffic from the network across multiple platforms, reconstructs user screens and keystrokes, identifies business transactions performed, tracks user behavior patterns and generates alerts on exceptions in real-time. The new case management function allows fraud investigation teams to effectively manage the organizational process of internal investigations from alerts prioritization and review to workload balancing. Accessing the Intellinx repository of recorded data and behavior indicators, investigators can analyze the activity of suspicious users and compare and correlate it to the behavior of their peers. The system maintains the history of each case including activities, notes, attachment files, relevant alerts and related cases.
Intellinx also detects and alerts supervisors to situations requiring intervention, such as cases not handled within an appropriate timeframe, or tasks that require reassignment when investigators are out of office ill or on vacation. The knowledge-base of investigated cases maintained by the system can be used for refining business rules to reduce false-positive rates. Organizations maintain the flexibility to utilize all or some of the Intellinx capabilities, as the system enables integration with thirdparty or in-house case management systems.
